Barbara Solomon
As a school psychologist in the Guilford Schools until early retirement in 1997, Barbara Solomon worked with students, families, and teachers at the secondary level, initially at Adams and Baldwin Middle Schools and for the last ten years at Guilford High School. As part of her role in evaluating and making recommendations to address students’ cognitive and emotional needs, she often called upon people in the community to act as informal mentors to students and their families. These adult friendships were often one of the most powerful positive interventions in students’ lives. Thus, it was a natural choice to serve on the Advisory Board convened in early 1999 to study the feasibility of a formal Mentoring Program at Guilford High School. In the fall of 1999, she assumed the role of Coordinator for the pilot program and has continued in that role through the expansion of the program into all 7 of the Guilford Schools.
Lisa Ott
Lisa Ott, a graduate of Guilford Schools, received her Masters in Teaching from Connecticut College and worked as Youth Program Coordinator for Tri-Town Youth Services before taking time to be with her children. She and her husband, David, have three children: Emily, Peter and Danielle. While helping to coordinate Guilford Youth Mentoring, she also volunteers with DAY of Team Guilford, encouraging youth empowerment. She loves animals, reading, travel, being outdoors, and boats.
Simona Nerney
After graduating from Quinnipiac University with a BS Degree in International Business, Simona Nerney spent several years working as an inventory planner for a local sportswear manufacturer. In 1998, she moved to Guilford from West Haven with her husband Joe and their son Luke. Shortly thereafter, their daughter Isabella was born and Simona made the decision to be a full time mother. Since then she has enjoyed volunteering countless hours in her children's schools and extracurricular activities. " When I recently decided to go back to work, I was thrilled about the opportunity to be part of a group that serves our community's youth. I am so pleased to be involved with such a special group of volunteers." Simona Nerney
